How to Wear Fall 2026 Trends for Your Body Shape
Here's the truth about "dressing for your body type": there are no rules you have to follow. Style is about feeling good in what you wear. What body-shape tips can do is help you pick the version of a trend that works with your proportions, so you spend less time returning things. Use these as a starting point, not a rulebook.
First, a Quick Way to Find Your Shape
Stand in front of a mirror and compare your shoulders, waist and hips. If your hips are wider than your shoulders, you're likely a pear. If your shoulders are wider than your hips, you're an inverted triangle. If your shoulders and hips are similar with a defined waist, you're an hourglass. If they're similar without much waist definition, you're a rectangle. If you carry more weight through the middle, you're an apple. Many women are a mix, and that's normal.
Pear
Draw the eye up and let the bottom half skim. Try: a statement top or velvet bodice with a darker, straight or wide-leg pant; a denim blazer that ends at the high hip; boat necklines and puff sleeves. Fall trend to love: the belted waist, worn over a fit-and-flare dress.
Inverted Triangle
Add volume below and keep the top clean. Try: V-necks, wide-leg jumpsuits, A-line and tiered midi skirts, and boots with some presence. Fall trend to love: a shimmer wide-leg jumpsuit with a belt.
Hourglass
Follow your waist. Try: wrap dresses, ruched bodycon dresses, belted coats and high-rise jeans. Fall trend to love: a figure-skimming velvet dress or jumpsuit, one of the biggest looks of the season.
Rectangle
Create curves and play with shape. Try: cocoon sleeves, peplum tops, ponchos over fitted pieces and ruched details. Fall trend to love: the oversized, cozy silhouettes that are everywhere this year.
Apple
Lengthen your line and highlight your legs and neckline. Try: V-necks, open long jackets and waterfall cardigans, empire waists and straight-leg pants. Fall trend to love: a drapey suede jacket left open, which creates a long vertical line.
Petite & Tall
Petite: keep the proportions close to your frame. Cropped jackets, ankle-length pants and one-color outfits make you look taller. With a poncho, choose a shorter one. Tall: you can carry long coats, maxi dresses and bold, oversized pieces. Try mixing proportions, like a long jacket over a midi skirt.
Tips That Work for Everyone
- Fit is everything. A $10 tailoring fix (hemming pants, taking in a waist) makes clothing look custom.
- Try sizes up and down. Sizes vary a lot between brands, especially secondhand. Check measurements, not the label.
- Wear what makes you feel good. Confidence is the most flattering thing you can put on.
