Why Resale Is the Smartest Way to Shop in 2026
Secondhand isn't a niche anymore. It's one of the fastest-growing ways women shop for clothes. Whether you're building a wardrobe on a budget, trying to buy less fast fashion, or just love the thrill of a great find, resale deserves a spot in your shopping routine. Here's why, and how to do it well.
The Numbers Behind the Resale Boom
According to ThredUp's 2026 Resale Report (its 14th annual report, released in April 2026):
- The U.S. secondhand apparel market is projected to reach $78.8 billion by 2030.
- In 2025, U.S. secondhand grew nearly 4x faster than the broader clothing market.
- Globally, secondhand is expected to hit $393 billion by 2030, growing about twice as fast as apparel overall.
- Gen Z and Millennials are expected to drive more than 70% of that growth.
- Nearly half of shoppers now discover secondhand finds through social media, creators and influencers rather than traditional search.
That last point is exactly why I started pairing this blog with my own closet: you read about a trend here, and you can shop a piece of it right away.
Why I Love Shopping (and Selling) Resale
Better pieces for less. Resale lets you buy brands and fabrics you might skip at full price: velvet, suede, sequins and special-occasion dresses that often sell for a fraction of retail.
Nobody else has your outfit. Secondhand racks are full of one-of-a-kind pieces and past-season styles you won't see on everyone else.
Less waste. Every piece that gets a second life is one less item heading to a landfill, and one less new item that has to be made.
Your closet becomes flexible. When you're done with something, you can list it and put that money toward your next find.
How to Shop Resale Like a Pro
Check measurements, not just the size tag. Sizing varies wildly between brands, so compare the listing's measurements to a piece you already own that fits well.
Read the condition carefully. "New with tags," "excellent," and "good" mean different things. Look at every photo, especially seams, underarms and hems.
Ask questions. Sellers are happy to answer questions about fit, fabric or stretch before you buy.
Bundle and make offers. On Poshmark you can bundle several items from one seller to save on shipping, and most sellers (me included!) welcome reasonable offers.
Compare platforms. Many sellers list on more than one site, and prices or shipping can differ, so it's worth checking both. Also read each platform's return and buyer-protection policies before you check out.
