Catalina Island Getaway: Avalon, Golf Carts and Ocean Adventures

Catalina Island Getaway: Avalon, Golf Carts and Ocean Adventures

Just off the coast of Southern California, Catalina Island feels like a different world. The main town, Avalon, is a small harbor town where golf carts outnumber cars and everything is walkable. Most of the island is protected wild land. In the fall, the water is often still warm and the summer crowds are gone, which makes it a great time to go.

Getting There

Ferries run to Avalon from Long Beach, San Pedro and Dana Point, and the ride takes about an hour. Book ahead on weekends and holidays. If you get seasick, sit on the lower deck toward the back. A helicopter service is also available if you want to splurge.

Exploring Avalon

  • Rent a golf cart and drive the scenic roads above town for views over the harbor.
  • Visit the Catalina Casino. Despite the name, it's not for gambling. It's a stunning 1929 Art Deco ballroom and movie theater, and tours tell its history.
  • Walk Crescent Avenue, the waterfront street lined with shops, ice cream and cafes.
  • Relax at Descanso Beach Club, just past the Casino, with beach loungers and cocktails.

Ocean Adventures

Catalina's clear water is famous for snorkeling and diving. Lover's Cove near the ferry landing is a protected area where you can see bright orange garibaldi, California's state marine fish. You can also kayak, paddleboard, take a glass-bottom boat or go on a zip line above Descanso Canyon.

Into the Wild

For a different side of the island, take a guided eco-tour into the interior, where you might spot the island's famous herd of bison. Hikers can tackle sections of the Trans-Catalina Trail, and the quiet village of Two Harbors on the west end is a peaceful escape.

What to Pack

  • Swimsuit, sunscreen (reef-friendly if you can) and sunglasses
  • Comfortable walking sandals or sneakers
  • A sundress for dinner and a light layer for the ferry ride and evenings

Hours, prices and events change often, so check official websites before you go.
