12 Easy Fall Outfit Formulas for Women
An outfit formula is a simple recipe: a top, a bottom, a layer and a shoe that always work together. Once you have a few that suit your life, getting dressed takes two minutes instead of twenty. Here are the twelve fall formulas I keep coming back to this season, built around the colors and shapes that are everywhere for fall 2026: deep reds, warm browns, suede, velvet and polished denim.
Everyday & Weekend
1. Turtleneck + straight jeans + poncho + knee boots. The coziest outfit of the season. A cream or camel poncho over a fitted turtleneck keeps the shape balanced: loose on top, slim on the bottom.
2. White tee + dark jeans + long denim jacket + loafers. Denim on denim works when the washes are close in color. A longer jacket looks more polished than a cropped one.
3. Midi dress + cardigan + ankle boots. The easiest way to keep wearing your summer dresses. Pick a cardigan in a darker tone than the dress so it reads as fall.
4. Knit sweater + slip skirt + sneakers. Soft and slightly unexpected. Tuck just the front of the sweater to show your waist.
Work & Errands
5. Denim blazer + black tee + black trousers + pointed flats. Structured enough for the office and relaxed enough for Friday. Denim tailoring is one of the big fall 2026 stories.
6. Suede jacket + cream knit + dark jeans + suede boots. Stick to two or three warm neutrals (camel, chocolate, cream) and the outfit always looks expensive.
7. Shirt dress + belt + tall boots. A statement belt at the waist is one of the season's micro-trends and turns a simple dress into a real outfit.
8. Monochrome knit set + long coat. Wearing one color head to toe makes you look taller and instantly put together. Burgundy, oatmeal and chocolate all work.
Date Night & Parties
9. Velvet jumpsuit + leather jacket + pointed boots. Velvet in a deep red is the single most "fall 2026" piece you can wear. The leather jacket keeps it from looking too formal.
10. Sequin mini + black tights + blazer. Party sparkle that still works for a dinner out. Opaque tights make a mini feel seasonal.
11. Velvet midi + strappy heels + gold jewelry. Simple, elegant and right for weddings and holiday parties.
12. Wide-leg jumpsuit + statement belt + heeled sandals. One piece, zero thinking. A shimmer fabric dresses it up for the holidays.
How to Make Your Own Formulas
- Start with what you wear most. If you live in jeans, build three formulas around jeans before anything else.
- Keep a "third piece." A jacket, cardigan, vest or belt is what makes an outfit look finished.
- Repeat your shoes. Two or three pairs of fall shoes (a boot, a flat and a sneaker) can cover almost every formula.
- Write them down. A note on your phone with your favorite five formulas saves a lot of busy mornings.
Several of the pieces above are from my own closet and available secondhand. You'll find them all on my Shop My Closet page.
