What's New in Los Angeles: A Fun Weekend Guide for 2026
Los Angeles is huge, so the trick to a great weekend is picking a few neighborhoods and enjoying them, instead of spending all day in the car. Here's my guide to a fun LA weekend in 2026, starting with the city's biggest new arrival.
LACMA's New David Geffen Galleries
After years of construction, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art opened its new David Geffen Galleries on April 19, 2026. The dramatic building, designed by architect Peter Zumthor, stretches across Wilshire Boulevard and showcases the museum's collection in a whole new way. Afterward, take the classic photo at Urban Light, Chris Burden's installation of restored vintage street lamps, which is especially magical after dark. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and the La Brea Tar Pits are right nearby, so you can easily spend a full day on Museum Row.
Best Views in the City
- Griffith Observatory: free admission, views of the Hollywood Sign and downtown, and a planetarium show. Go for sunset.
- The Getty Center: free admission (parking is paid), with gardens, art and views from the mountains to the ocean.
Eat Your Way Around LA
Spend a morning at Grand Central Market downtown, a food hall that has served Angelenos for more than a century. Then explore the Arts District for murals, galleries, coffee and shopping. For something special, book dinner in West Hollywood or Silver Lake.
For the Thrill-Seekers
Universal Studios Hollywood combines rides with a real working studio. Don't miss the Studio Tour, and if you love Mario, Super Nintendo World is a must. In the fall, the park's Halloween Horror Nights events are a fun (and scary) night out with friends.
Beach Day
End your weekend at the coast. Walk the Santa Monica Pier, people-watch on the Venice Boardwalk, or head south to the beach cities. Here's my guide to a perfect day in Hermosa Beach.
Local Tips
- Plan your days by neighborhood to avoid traffic.
- Book timed tickets for popular museums and attractions ahead of time.
- Bring layers. Even warm LA days can turn cool at night, especially near the ocean.
Hours, prices and events change often, so check official websites before you go.
