Hermosa Beach: A Perfect Day in the South Bay

Hermosa Beach: A Perfect Day in the South Bay

Hermosa Beach is the laid-back middle sister of LA's South Bay beach cities, between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. It's small, walkable and full of energy, and in the fall the summer crowds thin out while the weather often stays beautiful. Here's how to spend a perfect day.

Morning: The Strand

Start with coffee and a walk, run or bike ride along The Strand, the paved beachfront path that runs through Hermosa and connects to its neighbors. Rent a beach cruiser and ride north to Manhattan Beach for a look at its pier and shops, then head back for breakfast.

Midday: Beach Time

Hermosa's wide, sandy beach is made for lounging, swimming and people-watching. It's also a hub for beach volleyball, with nets set up along the sand. Watching a game is free entertainment, and if you've ever wanted to learn, there are local classes and clinics. Surfers will find waves around the pier.

Afternoon: Shop and Stroll

Walk up from the beach to explore the local boutiques, surf shops and cafes. Then take a stroll out on the Hermosa Beach Pier for ocean views in both directions.

Evening: Sunset and Pier Plaza

Grab a spot on the sand for sunset; the sun sets over the ocean and it's one of the best shows in town. Afterward, head to Pier Plaza, the pedestrian area at the foot of the pier, for dinner, drinks and live music.

Make It a Beach-Cities Weekend

  • Manhattan Beach: upscale shops and restaurants, and a classic pier with a small aquarium at the end.
  • Redondo Beach: a working harbor with seafood spots, the pier and kayak or paddleboard rentals.
  • Palos Verdes: a short drive south for coastal hikes and dramatic cliffside views.

What to Wear

Beach-casual all day: a swimsuit and cover-up, denim shorts or a sundress, sandals, and a light jacket for the cool evenings. For dinner on Pier Plaza, a midi dress with a denim jacket is perfect.

Hours, prices and events change often, so check official websites before you go.
