Carmel-by-the-Sea: A Fairy-Tale Weekend on the Central Coast
Carmel-by-the-Sea looks like it was drawn for a storybook: tiny cottages with steep roofs, flower-filled courtyards, cypress trees and a white-sand beach at the end of the main street. It's a perfect slow weekend, and fall is a lovely time to go, when the Central Coast often sees some of its clearest, sunniest days.
Wander the Village
Carmel is made for walking. Explore the hidden courtyards and passageways off Ocean Avenue, where you'll find boutiques, galleries and cafes. Look for the fairy-tale cottages on the side streets. Fun fact: many homes in Carmel don't have street numbers, and they're known by names instead. The town is also famously dog-friendly, so don't be surprised to see pups on restaurant patios.
Wine Tasting
You can taste wines from nearby Carmel Valley and the Santa Lucia Highlands right in the village, where tasting rooms are a short walk from each other. For a day trip, drive into Carmel Valley, which is sunnier and warmer than the coast and full of wineries.
Nature Up Close
- Carmel Beach: soft white sand and turquoise water at the bottom of Ocean Avenue. Bring a blanket for sunset.
- Point Lobos State Natural Reserve: just south of town, with cypress groves, hidden coves, sea otters and some of the most beautiful coastal trails in California. Go early, as parking fills up.
- 17-Mile Drive: the scenic road through Pebble Beach, with ocean views and the famous Lone Cypress. There's an entry fee per car.
Nearby Favorites
- Monterey Bay Aquarium: one of the best aquariums in the world, about 15 minutes away.
- Carmel Mission: one of California's most beautiful historic missions.
- Big Sur: drive south on Highway 1 to see Bixby Bridge and the dramatic coastline. Check road conditions before you go.
What to Wear
Carmel is cooler than Southern California, so pack layers: jeans, a cozy sweater or poncho, a jacket and comfortable flat shoes for the hilly streets and trails. A midi dress with boots is perfect for dinner. (Leave the very high heels at home. An old town rule technically requires a permit to wear heels over two inches, though it's rarely enforced.)
